We were finally able to get our principal in room to take pictures with our extraordinary students who have successfully passed both the Kindergarten and First grade Sight-Word books! This is a total of 396 words! They are all on their way to being successful readers! I am extremely proud of each and every one of them!

Art Lesson
Today we had our very last Art lesson with Mrs. Smith, one of the district Art teachers! We completed 3 projects throughout the year with her: a 2-day watercolor project, an "Under the Sea" relief picture with stamping, and this construction paper abstract sculpture! I loved this project because students had to follow step-by-step instructions, use counting skills, identify different colors and shapes, as well as use their own creativity! The finished products are drying right now and will be displayed in the classroom shortly!

Read Across America Week-Day Five
Friday was our last day of our week long celebration for Read Across America. The students wore green for The Grinch but we celebrated the day with Green Eggs and Ham since it's not December and The Grinch relates to Christmas.
I made green eggs and ham at 6AM before leaving for work. I used two dozen eggs), deli meat, and food coloring (all from Ralphs). I bought the green shamrock cupcake papers from Michael's Arts and Crafts.
Students wear these glasses ($1 from Target) to reread books! I bought them last Spring and popped the lenses out just to make them fun! The kids love to reread books just so they can wear these special glasses! Too cute! :)
We began our day coloring and cutting out a place mat for our taste testing of green eggs and ham. After taste-testing, we graphed the results! We had 14 students who liked the green eggs and ham and one that did not. Later in the day we read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss and watched the 20 minute video. Before leaving to go home, we made a Tic-Tac-Toe game board and played with a partner! It was a great ending to our wonderful week!

Read Across America Week-Day Four
Today our students dressed in mis-matched clothes for Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days. This is a fabulous book that I would recommend to all of you. It is about feelings and how colors are associated with them! Yellow is often thought of as a cheerful color while blue is often thought of as sad. These are just a couple of examples. I encourage you to pick up the book at the public library or your local Borders Book Store (Barnes & Noble doesn't have any in stock)!
We began our day working with rhyming words and creating word families on our Cat hats! Later in the day we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and students wrote their own rhyming sentences! They continue to amaze me each and every day! Before leaving for P.E., we colored a bookmark (see below) and water-colored our own body which we'll write about tomorrow! All in all, it was another great day for Reading Across America!

Read Across America Week-Day Three
Group shot from the end of the day!
Graphing fish for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss
Using great strategies: Students sorted their fish into color groups first then colored in the corresponding number of fish!

Today was pajama day for Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book! Although many of us had never heard of that book, we surely weren't going to complain about wearing PJ's to work! :) The kids were so happy this morning talking about the colors, patterns, and styles of their pajamas. We didn't have one pair of students in the same ones! I was shocked. We watched The Lorax which is another Dr. Seuss Book. In addition, we completed a Math graph for One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish! They turned out adorable! I think one of the highlights of the day for the kids was to work on an Art project with Mrs. Smith! Students created a picture of the ocean using "rubbing" and stamps! Students were given pieces of construction paper with dried glue waves, paper seaweed, and rock on them. They took their white sheet of paper and rubbed of the glue waves with blue to make waves in the ocean, green for the seaweed, and brown for the rocks. They then used paint and foam stamps along with red, orange, and purple paint to place fish and other sea creatures onto their picture! I loved Mrs. Smith's idea of using the foam shapes (I see these at Michael's Arts and Crafts) and using foam glue to stick them onto pieces of chip board to become a stamp! ...very creative! Thanks for the great idea Mrs. Smith! We'll see you again next Wednesday!
