Making Our Own Butterflies
Caterpillar to Butterfly
We worked on a Life Science unit learning about the life cycle of a butterfly! In doing this, we ordered caterpillars from www.insectlore.com. The students loved watching the three caterpillars go through the stages to become beautiful butterflies: egg (ova--we did not see this stage in class), caterpillar, chrysalis (pupa), butterfly.
When we received our caterpillars, they came in this cylindrical container full of food on the bottom (that looked like peanut butter) and holes on the lid so they could breathe. They ate for about a week and grew in length and width.

The caterpillars then climbed to the top of the container, hung like a "J" and formed a hard shell called the chrysalis, or pupa.
Caterpillars are in the chrysalis for approximately 2 weeks, or 14 days. During this time, they are changing from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Just before breaking through the hard shell, it becomes transparent. We were actually able to see the coloring on their wings as well as some spots. The students were SUPER EXCITED!
Muffins with Mom/Donuts with Dad
Muffins with Mom/Donuts with Dad was a special day to complete a project with Mom and/or Dad and show our appreciation for all that they do to help us along the way! Without you, success would not be possible.
Parents and students made a family tree using a brown lunch bag, Sharpie markers, tape, and copied apples. They were simply adorable and something that myself and Mrs. Rivera made at the Southern California Kindergarten Conference back in February! Hope you enjoyed them!
