Drum roll please................................................ our pet hermit crab earned his/her name today; Crystal the Crab!!! Student worked in groups of 3-4 to create a name. Telling Time
We are studying "Telling Time" right now for Math! Mrs. Rivera, one of my Kindergarten colleagues had a great idea (THANK YOU): I made copies of clocks and the students cut them out and created a necklace with them. I then borrowed a timer from Mrs. Sims, our principal and set it for an hour. Each hour, along with our regular school clock, the buzzer rang and we changed our clocks to the next hour. We did this counting by 5's like the macarena! The kids absolutely love it! I had one of them say to me, "Mrs. Acosta, the minute hand isn't on the 12 anymore so why are we keeping it there and only changing the hour hand?" As a teacher, this became one of those teachable moments. I validated this student by saying that she was correct, it wasn't 10 o'clock anymore it was 10:10. They asked how because it looked like 10:2. I then went on to explain that we counted by 5's when using the large numbers and the minute hand. I love our class! They are such awesome learners and inquirers!
Hermit Crab
Since we began studying about the ocean and animals that live in salt and fresh water, we got a class pet: a hermit crab! He is yet to be named! We'll be working on that tomorrow! The students helped put everything together and love to observe and journal about him. We read the book, A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle today in class. Adorable book! We also sponge painted our own hermit crabs which will be displayed in our room shortly!
Bob's Big Boy Fundraiser
To help our 6th graders out with their field trip, Monte Vista had a fundraiser at Bob's Big Boy in West Covina! A few our our students showed up and even got to take a picture with the Big Boy! It was a lot of fun getting to wait on our students and families. I enjoyed getting to talk to different families, serve drinks, bus tables, and even make shakes! Thank you to everyone who came out to support 6th grade. It meant a lot to them!
Easter Activities
We did many fun things the week leading into Spring Break such as dying eggs, graphing with jelly beans, decorating bunny bags, making bunny faces with paper plates, writing a class story, and an Easter Egg Hunt! Hopefully you can see some of the fun the students had through these pictures!
These are the 3 lucky golden egg winners! The only special thing about them was that they were in the classroom and had a few pieces of candy in them. The eggs the students found outside were the real hard boiled eggs that they dyed!

Searching high and low!
Some were right in front of their eyes!
...and even under the playground apparatus!
Some students had never done an Easter Egg Hunt! I'm glad I could give them that experience!
